The
lumber is air dried to 20% +/- and then kiln dried in our dehumidification
kiln. After kiln drying, the lumber is sorted and we determine the potential
uses of the lumber. The first step is to separate the clear matched sets
of lumber and long clear boards. At this point we examine the remaining
boards as to their best use and part them out accordingly. Wide clear shorts,
many matching from the same log, are separated out and kept together for
1 piece chest sides panels and tops. Figured wood and crotches are cut at
the point of defect and kept for tops and panels Areas with a lot of grain/figure
are separated for drawer fronts and/or panels and kept together in short
matched sets. The rest of the lumber that is narrow or has no distinguishing
characteristics such as width of grain/activity is kept in matches as grade
lumber for various purposes such as rails and stiles, feet, moldings, drawer
blades, etc.
