The
finest stands of black cherry are found in the forests of North-Central
Pennsylvania, the result of clear cutting of the northern forests in the
last half of the 19th century. The forests were principally Pine and hemlock,
and after they were cut and abandoned, the forest regenerated primarily
as a hardwood forest whose trees are now reaching their prime. These forests
are the source of our cherry logs and lumber, and the lumber that we stock
is selected for it's color and grain with good light red heartwood and
minimal sapwood.

The 4/4 and 5/4 lumber ranges from 4" to 20+" in width and comes in single boards, matched set of boards and flitches. There are shorts set aside for panels and drawer fronts and short wide boards for 1 piece case sides and tops for chests, tables, sideboards, etc. Many of these have strong grain patterns and figure. There are large diameter tops for round tables and candlestands and we also carry cherry crotches in these thickness'. | ||||||
| We stock wide boards for 1 piece headboards and long boards designated for 2 piece headboards from the same board. There are sets of plain and figured cherry for matching drawer fronts and panels, and sets of matching lumber with a strong grain/figure for pieces like secretary desks. The 8/4 typically runs from 5" to 14" in width although we occasionally have widths up to 20+", in single planks and also matched sets. The 10/4, 12/4, 16/4, 20/4, and 24/4 is primarily cut for turning and leg stock and is cut extra plump and in multiples for matching squares. This is available in squares, single planks and matched sets of planks. We have shorts available for leg stock and low post beds as well. We cut matched sets of wide boards for table tops in 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 8/4 in plain cherry. The tops are 2-4 boards wide and range from 30" to 48+" and from 5' to 12' long. | |||||||
